Physician Compare Updates Take Time

Plan ahead if you anticipate needing to update your general information on Physician Compare because it can take some time. In fact, it can take 2 to 4 months for the changes to appear on that website.

Physician Compare is a nationwide database of health care providers. Created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2010, the information allows consumers to help find physicians and other clinicians to meet their health care needs. The performance information on the database helps those who need medical services make informed decisions about their health care.

Keeping Physician Compare Information Current

Health care providers are responsible for keeping their information current on Physician Compare. Any change to general information must be updated including:

  • Name
  • Education
  • Phone number
  • Address
  • Group practice affiliation
  • Specialty

These changes should be made via the internet-based PECOS system.

For changes in residency, board certification or hospital affiliation, send an email including your full name and your NPI number to the Physician Compare team at PhysicianCompare@Westat.com.

Remember, from the time you enter your changes into PECOS, it can take 2 to 4 months for those changes to be reflected at Physician Compare. You want your current and potential patients to have the most current information about your practice – keeping your Physician Compare data fresh will help them fairly evaluate your services when choosing a health care provider.
